Rise to the challenge! Help decrease colorectal cancer incidence in your community by creating a project to raise awareness and increase screening. Click here to apply for the National Challenge!
The theme of the 2012 Colorectal Cancer Screening Saves Lives National Challenge is families. Projects may range from public awareness and education to screening and patient navigation with a focus on families. For more information on project requirements, including eligibility and selection, view the application guidelines.
Colorectal cancer is preventable, yet over 143,000 people are expected to be diagnosed with the disease in 2012. The Prevent Cancer Foundation realizes the importance of screening and awareness programs on the local level and created the National Challenge as a way to champion “grass-roots” community projects.
All applicants will receive educational resources and an electronic media toolkit to help promote their project. The first place winner will receive:
- A $5,000 grant to support their screening project
- A Prevent Cancer Super Colon community stop ($10,000 value)
- A feature on the Prevent Cancer blog, an article in PreventWorks newsletter, and continual exposure on the Screening Saves Lives website.

The National Challenge is a project of the Prevent Cancer Foundation that aims to engage participating organizations in an online community supportive of colorectal cancer screening efforts across the country. For over 25 years, the Foundation has provided more than $125 million in support of cancer prevention research, education, advocacy and community outreach programs nationwide.

God, grant me the Serenity
to accept the things I cannot change.
The courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace;
Taking, as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is;
Not as I would have it;
Trusting that You will make all things right
if I surrender to Your will;
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with You
Forever in the next.

As for God,
His way is perfect! (Psalm 18:30)
Let God choose for you,
it will be the right decision.
Let God guide you,
it will be the right direction.
Let God plan for you,
it will be in the right timing.
Let God measure for you,
it will be the right portion.
Let God help you,
it will be the right care.
Let God instruct you,
it will be the right teaching.
Let God prepare you,
it will be the right training.
Let God counsel you,
it will be the right perspective.
Let God work in you,
it will be the right result.

The fifth annual Jennifer Harman Celebrity Poker Tournament benefiting the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will now be televised.
The event will go off Saturday, May 21st at the Peppermill Resort Casino in conjunction with the Nevada State Poker Championship and as many as 1,000 participants are expected.
For the first time, the event will also be included in the Heartland Poker Tour’s fall line-up of televised programming available in over 100 million homes across America.
The event features a unique ten-player team format and also allows for individual player participation.
The buy-in is $200+$30 for individuals and $2,500 per team.
There will be prizes for the top 100 participants and top three teams, although all proceeds will go to benefit the Nevada SPCA.
Past contributions have allowed the SPCA to extend its community outreach program, build awareness around the no-kill movement, and expand its facility.
In 2008, the Nevada SPCA officially unveiled a Jennifer Harman Wing thanks to contributions from the event.
“The best thing about having a pet is experiencing their unconditional love,” Harman said. “The Nevada SPCA ensures these once abandoned and abused animals are cared for, adopted, or live humanely in its no-kill shelter for the rest of their lives. Everyone who participates is actually saving a life, and that means so much to me.”

I am sitting in a chair watching Mike gather wood for a fire. I was following him around, but stopped when he laughed! I was carrying my purse round with me. Guess gathering firewood with a purse on your shoulder is a bit too fashionable for the trail.
When we were hiking in I realize how many errors I made planning my portion of the trip. I am wearing flip flops with shorts. So now I’m getting my legs scratched up and eaten by bugs. Sticks are poking my feet and I have no balance in these silly shoes.
Within 10 feet I was attacked by a swarm of mosquitos. I tried to run away from them only to have one land in my eye. Mike saved me by spraying me down with “Repel 100″. It worked instantaneously! I hope it lasts for a while.
We have never camped together before and I haven’t been in 25 years. Do you thinking camping is like riding a bike? That it will all come back go me? Sure hope so!

Saturday of this special weekend, I wake up at a very reasonable 10 am. I woke with a smile on my face, as it was noon at home. After getting ready, I headed to the lobby at the Hilton Ft. Collins and hit up Starbuck’s for yogurt, fruit, muffin, and a very large iced coffee.
We were scheduled for our limo pickup at 11:45 am for beginning of the “Night at the Four Deuces Charity Event”. I was the first one to arrive in the lobby and surprised Sean by greeting him with, “Are you Sean?” Gotta love Facebook. It really helps!
The rest of the gang (Tiffany Michelle, Maria Ho, Jan Fisher, Linda Johnson, Jennifer Leigh, Kyle Villers, et all) arrived soon there after. We took some photos, piled into the limo, and we were off!
Just past noon we made our first stop at Vintages Handcrafted Wines for a wine making tour. At this place you actually create a custom-made wine from grapes obtained from around the world. We were greeted by Lino DiFelice, Chief Winemaker. Lino walked us through the entire process of tasting the various wines so that he could develop a taste designed just for me! We must have tasted 20+ wines.
Here’s a bit more about the process: Vintages ferments your grape selections according to your own tastes, at about half the price of commercial wines. When your wine is ready you get to come into the shop and bottle, cork and label your newly fermented wine batches.

I made it home yesterday very tired and satisfied with a successful trip to Ft. Collins, CO. I went to support the Realities for ChildrenTriumph Awards by attending two events: A Night at the Four Deuces and the Fort Collins Series of Poker’s “Celebrity Knockout” Charity Event. Both events are part of the Fort Collins Series of Poker (FCSOP). In the process, I made some wonderful new friends.
After arriving Friday evening, I was picked up at the Denver airport by Kyle Villers and Adam Huch, two great guys and avid supporters of the charity. They were both charming and attentive. After getting the other gals (Tiffany Michelle, Jennifer Leigh, and Mario Ho) and all our bags, we hopped into a limo for the trip to Ft Collins. It was about an hour to the hotel so there was plenty of time to get acquainted.
I opted for room service for dinner and an early bedtime on my arrival day, as we have a busy fun filled day tomorrow! I will tell you about our day Saturday soon with pictures! Keep your eye out for the next post…..
Many Blessings,
Jena
